Crystal Palace are known for their giant killing.
They just love to take on big clubs and pile misery on them.
Sometimes it feels as if they only want to play the big clubs of the premier league.
They always turn up for these games. And once again they did tonight.
What an amazing game, Manchester City vs Crystal Palace, a draw at Etihad Stadium ruining Pep’s day and giving a much bigger title boost to Liverpool, who now can have a 16 points lead after tomorrow’s game against Manchester United along with a game in hand!
Crystal Palace leaders at the back Cahill & Tomkins..
What a performance by this duo in this game against such vicious flow of attacks by Manchester City keeping them at bay for 82 minutes.
Cahill, a veteran of the premier league led his defense line stupendously.
It was a great defensive performance overall by Crystal Palace.
Every single player knew what they had to do & they did it so well.
They were brilliant especially against a City side who always keep the ball and keeps on attacking tirelessly.
Crystal Palace had their shape, they were outstandingly compact.
Cahill & Tomkins were everywhere in the middle of the defense clearing balls and making last ditch tackles.
Martin Kelly & Reidewald were solid as well.
A solid defensive performance against such a deadly opposition.
The midfielders in McArthur, McCarthy & Kouyate deserve the plaudits too.
And I won’t forget Jordan Ayew on the right side of the midfield.
Held the ball pretty good, tracked back well while keeping his composure.
Went forward with the ball and allowed his team to settle.
They worked their socks off covering and closing the gaps between their defense and themselves.
Always present in the box to clear the balls and were very composed & compact.
Crystal Palace in the first half didn’t have much composure on the ball, giving it away in very serious & dangerous positions, they were lucky to not concede.
A free-kick which hit the post by De Bruyne was the direct result of a giveaway.
Yet they held on superbly.
Cenk Tosun, a brilliant debut..Zaha creating Havoc..
If Cenk Tosun really plays like he played today against Manchester City at Etihad then I really don’t know why Everton loaned him to Palace?
The guy was isolated in the whole game but really put on a great shift.
Tosun was always there when Palace needed him up top.
The balls he won, the touches he made, the hold up play along with some really good passing was absolutely amazing to watch.
Looking at the perspective, he had very little to do & he did all of that excellently.
Mostly, forward players in such system fade away during the game.
He obviously didn’t.
Did all of what was asked of him and he delivered it to Roy Hodgson.
He scored for all his work in 39th minute.
With Palace’s first shot on goal, a deep corner to Cahill’s head directed to the far right corner where Tosun finessed it with his head onto the bottom left corner.
A pure striker’s goal.
He nearly scored a 2nd just moments later on but Ederson got lucky & ball ran much away from Tosun only for him to committing a foul on Stones.
Zaha as always was dangerous, this guy has been around for awhile now and is always dangerous.
The strength, the pace, the skills and ability to do it with confidence is absolutely brilliant to watch!
He once again today gave Manchester City a real headache.
He gives every one a headache.
The guy is really good.
Crystal Palace are lucky to still have him and I know he won’t be there long.
He & Tosun were creating all sorts of trouble for City whenever they got out and it is due to them Palace scored their goals.
Manchester City’s fight back..
Even though Manchester City didn’t go down without a fight especially late on with Jesus and Mahrez coming on for Silva & Bernardo Silva.
Their tempo pitched up and the pressure began to mount on Palace.
For a place like Etihad, there was a bit of a sound from City supporters considering how empty Etihad always is, even today.
Influencers getting paid well, eh?
Aguero, as always delivered for them.
The crosses began to flood in the Palace box, soon a peach of a cross from Jesus made Aguero lurk in behind Cahill to score in 82nd minute followed by another in the 87th minute.
This from another cross from Mendy this time, Aguero picked up the space created by Jesus and scored.
This goal probably looked like the winner for Pep’s side.
Palace, this time for all the hard work done left miserable.
You can’t blame them, it really is too damn difficult to maintain that level of defensive shape & stability for 90 minutes, being pressured and boxed in especially against a lethal opposition in an away game.
Game in hand now, Rodri in for Sterling, a defensive approach to kill of the game.
By the way Pep absolutely went bonkers with a celebration on Aguero’s second but…..
Palace with the ball in the midfield played on to Zaha and this guy just doesn’t stop.
He ran from the half line with Stones and a fresh Rodri trying to stop him.
Well, they failed against his strength, pace & trickery.
Zaha reached the byline of City’s box, squared a pacy ball in to the box for Wickham (brought on for Tosun on 81st minute) only for Fernandinho to fumble trying to stop it, scored an OWN GOAL!
Defending champions just baffled once again by Crystal Palace.
Manchester City have now given further boost to Liverpool in their title charge.
Surely for Pep & City its about Champions League, this season now.
